I am looking to intern/volunteer abroad in the sustainable development? What options are best?
-
I have just finished University in England and am now looking to gain experience in sustainable development through internships and/or volunteering. My question is, what are the best companies/programs to do this with? I have no current experience in this field, and I am not looking to pay £2000 to complete a course or pay to volunteer. I am looking to give my time and my self to work and volunteer, but I dont want to pay to volunteer. Are there any/many organisations that will pay travel expenses and offer good volunteering or internships options abroad?

Answer:
Hey James, You will not find any organization that will pay for you to volunteer/intern abroad. Please understand that these are travel trips and the projects you work on are for NGOs and Non-Profits. Why would they hire you, someone from England who has no relevant experience, language knowledge, contacts, training, etc. when they could hire a local who has the expertise in all of the above and they wouldn't even have to pay their travel expenses? I don't mean to put you down but just like you pay for Uni, you also pay for training and getting experience at an internship abroad. Someone needs to be there to help you throughout the whole Pre-Departure stuff (visa, insurance, safety, cultural training) and then when you arrive (airport transfer, find you good and safe housing, hygenic food, help you if you get sick, help you if you get dangerously ill or in a bad situation, and help orient you to your surroundings). Who would do that for you? Certainly not the NGO/Non-Profit that you are trying to do sustainable development for because they don't have the funds, the time, or the staff to do this for you. Therefore, you need to go through a third party organization who takes care of all these things. Therefore, you need to pay. It's not that you don't want to pay to volunteer, it's that you really don't have much other option. Sorry to be harsh but I have searched way too much on this topic and have visited too many developing areas to know that you can just ask a barely surviving Non-Profit to pay for your expenses so you can have a great international experience. If you are looking for something where you get a nominal amount of expenses paid for, Peace Corps would be your only option. Interrnships/Volunteering Abroad: http://www.leaveurmark.com

there are very few organizations that will pay for your travel expenses, food and accommodations. the reason for this is that most organizations do not have the resources to pay for all of this stuff. Alternatively you could choose to go with your church. Apart from church there are cheaper organizations like http://volunteercapitalcentre.org, they are more affordable than most organizations
