How do I convince my parents to host a foreign exchange student?

How can I convince my parents to let me host a foreign exchange student?

  • My dad is a very cheap man. He thinks hosting an exchange student would a great experience, but still refuses to allow me to. I'm going to be a freshman in high school (I'm a girl) and my sister is going to be a senior in high school. We have ALWAYS wished that we had another sibling. My dad can never make decisions, and the last day to sign up is next week. I've been talking about hosting to him for about 2 weeks now. He has tried to make up excuses like "what if you don't like the person" and "you have to focus on school". I have properly answered each of these questions. he won't even talk about it. How can I convince him?? My mom doesn't care about what happens.

  • Answer:

Hosting an exchange student takes a lot more work than you realize. If your parents aren't behind it 100% you're creating a very miserable situation for your entire family as well as for the poor exchange student. You shouldn't have to talk your dad into it and your mom should be enthusiastic, not blasé. Hint: his excuses are just a nice way to say no.

Do they get financial assistance? Maybe your dad is afraid of the additional cost? Explain to him that your family could provide this kid with an opportunity to broaden his experience, and that student could help you guys to learn more about different cultures and norms. In the end, it's still their home, and it's their call.
