Hi Robert, There are a lot of great organizations out there that send high school students abroad. You'll want to select one that is fully listed with the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel, such as Ayusa, to ensure that you are choosing a program with a long strong record of student safety and support. In addition to traditional trimester, semester, or academic year programs that take place during the school year, Ayusa also offers a number of summer language and volunteer programs that may better fit within your schedule. Because different schools have different policies on international transfer credit, be sure to speak with your guidance counselor to figure out how studying abroad will affect your graduation requirements and timing. It will be important for you and your school to realize that language barriers and curriculum differences mean that you won't necessarily have the same understanding (or course availability) that you did back home. You may need to shift your core corses courses into other semesters when you'll be in the US, or look at the possibility of taking them over the summer, online, or through a local community college. The earlier you have this conversation with your guidance counselor, the easier it will be to plan everything out. Ayusa's program advisors (1-800-579-1709 or [email protected]) can guide you through these conversations in more detail as well. More information about our scholarships and fundraising suggestions can be found on our website at www.ayusa.org/students/scholarships. The scholarship deadline is March 1, so you'll want to start speaking with your guidance counselor, parents, and our program advisors right away!

There are a few student exchange programs for high schoolers. Try to find your local Rotary Club (a common choice) who can give you much more information, and to see if you're eligible. I would suggest you go to Spain, rather than Italy because of your proficiency in the language. Many of the programs for high schoolers are full immersion, where you need to be able to be intelligible in reading/writing in that foreign language. Spain is really great, you'd love it. You need to make sure you have all your credits in place, otherwise you can't graduate. So that may mean doubling up on classes, or taking a few during this summer. If you can't get your high school diploma, that could screw up the timing on getting a job or applying to colleges. And if you aren't qualified for a full program, or you can't get enough credits in to graduate, there are many great alternatives, such as doing a summer program, perhaps only going for a semester, or a few months, or using a different type of program like People to People.
