Is Brazil a dangerous country?

Is Brazil a Third-World country?

  • When I think Third-World, I think about places like Ethiopia. We have an exchange-student from Brazil who's doing his senior project about EDUCATION specifically in third-world nations. He's fairly adament that Brazil is a third-world nation and that the education here in the U.S. is a gillion times better. He also says there no longer is a second-world, that that was all the communist or socialist nations that have fallen out of fashion. Idk where I'd have classified Brazil, but I'd have never thought them third-world in any capacity. Is he on crack or is he telling the truth?

  • Answer:

You have to think of the whole country, not just Rio de Janiero and the Copacabana, Football, F1, Embraer Jets, and Carneval. The quality of life in Brazil drops substantially the further away from the coast you go. That is why they are cutting down the rain forests, to try and eek out an agrarian living but lacking the education to make it sustainable.

We can't say that a country with the 7th largest economy of the planet is a 3rd world country. And we can't say that a country with such high rates of crime and slums belongs to the first world too. We are not Ethiopia, but we are not France too. We are in the middle term. If you say that USA is a developed country and Paquistan is a undeveloped country, I assume we can say that Brazil is an "emerging country". We are just in the middle of the road.
