Are there study abroad scholarships or financial aid?

I'm TRYING to study abroad in Denmark...?

  • OK, so I'm going through the NJ Consortium and I've been accepted to the University of Copenhagen through DIS for Fall 2009. The problem is, I'm not very well-off in money right now. My tuiton and housing for this study abroad (around 15 grand) is all being paid by scholarships and financial aid. I was going to save up for spending money over the summer. While I knew there would be fees (air fare, passport, Visa), I had no clue that I also needed to fork over $220 for a residence fee! Even worse, I apparently need proof that I make at least $830 a month (or will have at least that much available for each of the 4 months I'll be there), which I do not! And I don't have the money for living there yet, as me and my family haven;t saved up! I work a part time job that pulls in about $450 bucks a month. So is that it then? I JUST found out I was accepted and getting all these scholarships. I figured I had enough money to pay for passport, visa, and airfare and with help from my family I'd save up over the summer. Now with this $220 fee (and WHATEVER other annoying fees I don't know about) and the fact that I need proof that I'm rich or something, it looks like I just wasted $350 on the application fee. It might be naive, but I went into this telling my counselor I had little to no money and she encouraged me to go for it anyway. She didn't mention a residency permit or that I would need to prove I was well off to live in another country. Obviously many college kids aren't even that independent. ARGH.
