Becoming an exchange student?

Becoming a foreign exchange student for my senior year of high school, how would that affect my graduation?

  • If I were to become a foreign exchange student my senior year of high school to go to another country for that senior year, what would happen with my graduation? Would I graduate at the school I went in that country or would I graduate in the high school I spent my 3 years of high school and the district I spent my whole life attending? Like if I became a foreign exchange student am I totally leaving that school entirely to basically move to a different school for one year? How would that reflect me getting into a college back in the state or into another state? Just questions I have and don't know who to ask.

Well the best person to ask would be one of your school administrators. Go to the office and ask them about the foreign exchange program (if they even have one). Typically you would graduate from wherever you finished your studies. But again, you need to ask a school administrator about it. They also probably have specific high schools abroad that they work with. It's not like you could just pick anywhere you wanted to go. As far as it affecting your chances of getting into a college back home, if anything it would help you! That's something that a college would love to see, that you've studied abroad. It opens you up to different cultures and possibly even a different language. If your high school has a foreign exchange program and you can afford it, I would HIGHLY recommend it! :) Good Luck!

Walk right up to your school administrator and ASK if you will be given credit for the missed academic year or allowed to take some make-up exams. It depends on your country. It depends on your school. I know people who returned a little early from their exchange year to take school-leaving exams and graduated. I know those who had to repeat their senior year. BUT, if you ask me, repeating a year won't hurt you, and spending a year abroad is an experience not to be sneezed at. And, if you do well in your classes, colleges should be fine with that. Well, and some schools don't let their exchange students graduate. Like, American schools don't.
