Answer:
Im not entirely sure about everything, but your grades must be A's and B's (or at least that's how it is at my school), it does cost money (around $2,000-$5,000), you usually get there a few weeks before school starts so you can get settled in and get comfortable with your host family, and you leave after the school year is over. I believe the company that overlooks the exchange program will make sure to take you to the airport. I highly recommend you learn at least the basics about Japanese culture and learn the basics about polite speech, I'm sure the students there will help you out with casual speech. As far as I know you don't need a scholarship, but you must be in high school. That's all the information I can give you, if you want more details, I would talk with my counselor again and ask her about the program.

First talk to your parents and see if they are interested in letting you (and paying for you) to do this. If they are okay with it, then talk to your school counselor again and ask what you need to do to apply or register for study abroad. You would obviously need to be fairly fluent in Japanese to study in Japan.
