Career in the Beauty Industry.

Can a goth be in cosmetology?

  • Im a goth girl interested in a career in the beauty industry. I enjoy it very much but do my looks really matter? I took cosmetology classes last year to get my license earlier but it seemed most people were against me even my teacher. On the first day the girls were shocked to see me in chains, combat boots and black lipstick in which they mistreated me and even pulled a mean prank on me. My own teacher told me herself that she despised goths and gave me a hard time during the year and left me hopeless. I didn't go back this year and not sure if im gonna go back. If I go to beauty school after high school will they still be like this and keep me from my career? Do I have to change?

  • Answer:

You live in a small town, don't you? Yes, there are plenty of "goth" people in the beauty industry. The lady who does my nails and hair is a goth. She's the only one who can actually cut my hair correctly and she never tries to talk me out of my customary black nail polish or decorate my nails somehow. I'm not goth, either. I'm just your average metal head wench and black is my favorite color. I much prefer to have a goth person do my hair and nails as they are less likely to try to inflict their own BS standards of "beauty" on me. Not only that, most goths are very anal retentive so they are exceptionally precise and always get it just perfect. Ignore the snottiness you get from others, get your license and then rent a station somewhere or get your own shop or whatever it is you want to do.

Hell yeah some of the Goth people I know are very creative and artistic and usually have some nice hair cuts, and very dramatic make up. I think you could do cosmetology but just for client relations you might not want to wear the chains and combat boots to work...

I have numerous gothy girlfriends that are successful makeup artists and hair stylists. I'm not sure where you live, but I would suggest finding a new school to go to, I wouldn't want to be in a class with a teacher that told me to my face she despised me. All of my girlfriends had good experiences in the schools they went to, but those schools were in the Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA areas - so I could see it being very different if you live in a small town. I would advise you to tone down your look though while attending your classes. I'm not saying you need to completely change your style, but just tone it down. Black lipstick is quite a harsh, shocking look (and to be honest, it only actually looks good on about 1% of people who wear it, or in artistic photoshoots). Good luck hun.

y not? lol, just cuz ur goth dosent mean u cant be in cosemtology haha. Anybody can b in cosemtology, as a matte rof fact goths tend to be the ones who wear the most makeup. u can still b a goth later in ur career, but u will have to dress like a proffessional goth, prob not combat boots and all tht. Also your teacher is a ***** and she shudnt judge anyone, so dont pay attention to anyone.

YES change...live your life in color

Of course you can do it! never change yourself. And you should have taken legal action against the teacher. Discriminating against a certain lifestyle is as bad as discriminating against people of racial minorities or those who are gay, bi, etc. do not stand for such harassment and never change who you are because of ignorant people who are afraid of people different than them.

Of course. Does it take cosmetic skill to do what you do? Do you want to learn from these people or maybe just get s degree/license of some sort? then stick with it absolutely. The difference between your goth look and there's is a choice of style, but it's certainly cosmology. Would you assume that someone who has studied guitar can only play blues songs? then someone looking at your goth image would have no reason to assume that you have no skill at making other looks.

Yes, You can go to Cosmetology School, and ignore what other people say, and just tell them "At least I don't look like everyone else..". But honestly, You need to look more professional. If you wear chains and combat boots and baggy pants with ICP shirt with black lipstick, People aren't going to want to get their hair cut by you. People DO judge. If you can't put yourself together, then how can you do someone elses hair? I mean, You can still be yourself. Just tone it down a little, and dress more professional...Or if you get into the right salon, You can probley be a little more "yourself".

No! Dare is law agains it!!! YOU NO CAN BE COSMETOLOGIST!
