How come White Americans have always been resistant to African American music?

You are talking through your hat. I spent more time in the Apollo and the Savoy than most blacks. There were a lot of whites in attendence besides me. This was back in the days of Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Lionel Hampton to name a few. .By the way I am white Like North European type white. I might as well add I like all music regardless of the race, creed, or ethnic background of the musician or author of the music.

What are you talking about, if it weren't for the white teenagers buying their albums most of them would be broke. Look at the sales of these albums, even today you will find that whites buy the most music cd's.

Jazz was very popular at one time, and now rap is very popular, though God knows why. Most of it is disgusting and requires no musical talent- repeating "all these hos be up on me" in a monotone voice is not singing, nor is it music. It deserves to be criticized. LOL! I see your point... but blacks haven't exactly been buying millions of copies of Toby Keith and Carrie Underwood albums, or even R.E.M. and U2 for that matter. Most people like the music from their own culture. In most cases that is all there is to it. That said, your historical examples are different-- in the 1940s and 1950s the Civil Rights Movement was still developing and racism was rampant. It was a completely different time. So that is a bad example. Hip-hop, meanwhile, has actually been embraced by millions of white people. It is very popular amongst young white men, especially. Meanwhile, plenty of African-Americans complain about the violence and degradation of women in some hip-hop music. So I think you are guilty of a stereotype here, albeit one based on a little truth. And if you honestly think foreign whites treat their black populations so great, you are forgetting something really important-- they are the ones that enslaved Africans in the first place. What is more, their racism may not be directed at the black population (although that is actually greatly debatable), but racism is alive and well in Europe. Ask any Algerian, Indian, or Middle Easterner living there. Again, I think there is some truth to what you are saying, but you are making it into something that does not quite reflect reality. Frankly, I don't see how your perpetuating stereotypes about white Americans and ignoring common trends that contradict your perspective helps repair racial tensions in America. Actually trying to understand others and accept that they are different than you would be a better approach. That is ultimately what you are asking for here, but you won't get it if you don't return the favor. Good luck!

I don't consider myself racist, nor do I consider myself evil because I don't like "black music". Would you consider black people racist because they don't like Tool or Lamb of God? I understand that the rock I listen to today has it's roots in blues, jazz and chuck berry just as I understand that my human origins originated in Africa. Fortunately evolution and dispersion has created multiple races and music has evolved in to multiple genres. Diversity makes things interesting, what if we all looked alike and the only music we had to listen to was the big bopper? I'd shoot myself. Be glad there are so many different types of people and music in the world and be glad that the music YOU like is around for you to hear it.
