How to talk to a guy you like?

• There is this guy I work with who never used to talk to me. One day I called him over, we introduced ourselves and now whenever he walks by me he says "hi" or "goodnight" when he leaves. We have had one very short conversation about coffee and he kept saying things like, "that coffee was bad, man" and "I don't know, man." He kept calling me man like he was trying to act cool. We just don't talk, though. He doesn't stop to talk with me and it sometimes feels like he thinks he shouldn't be saying "hi" to me, like he I don't want him to say "hi" to me. I want to talk to him. I want to learn more about him, but I don't know how. He is so shy and barely talks to the people he works directly with. I know he may not be gay and I know office relationships aren't good. But I want to talk to him to learn if he does like me too. How can I talk to him more?
