How do sociologists explain prejudice?

Prejudice without discriminating?

  • can a person be prejudice without discriminating? Can a person discriminate without being prejudice? Please explain

  • Answer:

Yes. I'm prejudiced against morons, but I would never deny a moron's basic rights. Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion applies to the intellectually challenged as well.

Yes. You can have a prejudice going on inside your mind, but a lot of people don't act on that (discriminate). And of course, a person can make jokes and light heartedly discriminate, without actually meaning it or having a prejudice.

Prejudice means "pre-judice," that is, arriving at a decision before hearing the facts. Discrimination means having biased feelings. Not at all the same thing, although discrimination may lead to prejudice. The word "discrimination" actually means to remove the criminal aspect from some behavior, although it is not used in that sense now. As used now, "discrimination" means to favor one type of behavior against another, usually without just cause. Prejudice means to arrive at a decision prematurely. These two terms are frequently misunderstood and misused, possibly because they are related, if not synonymous.
