What is the difference between 2-way and 3-way car speakers?

When it comes to amps, car speakers and cd head units what should you compare or match up as of ohms watts rms?

  • I really want to improve the sound inside my car.I have a pioneer premier 690ub unit and i'm gonna buy a pair of alpine type R spr-17c componet speakers with a pair of type r 6x9's in the back.i've read many reviews saying that in order to get the best sound is to upgrade the interior speakers from stock to aftermarket and to get a amp. I'm not looking to get any subwoofers in the trunk,im just focused on the interior sound. I've also read that you should match the rms power of the speakers to the cd unit or amp? idk. Could someone explain how all that goes and any audio ideas would also help(brand of amp, brand of speakers, component vs. 2way and 3way speakers etc..) Thanks.

ha ha. I love it when noobies come to the worst places. Dude u should educate yourself a bit on this stuff. You'll appreciate your eqpt more. but... First set your budget. Go with a nice 4 way amp. what u can afford. then match the amperage to the high end no. of the continuous RMS of the speakers. Alpine's are good but there are MANY other companies out there. Listen to a few as the man suggested. see what u like. I have a JBL sub and literally could have gone with 7 other brands I liked. Now to push all those u will need some strong amp. And don;t dismiss the sub yet, it delivers what many cannot. Example- crank your rear speakers, and I mean high. Then fade to the fronts. Notice how much more sound u hear in the front, and the detail. The sub will fill the car with the bass it needs to enliven the music. If u have a sub set up properly at home u will know what I mean. I used to think like u, no worries. So IMHO spend more on some quality front components. My fronts are real cheap now at amazon for the winter deal. at $100 u cannot go wrong. thank me later

1) Ignore "2-way. 3-way, 4-way, 10-way, etc." Buy what sounds good to your ears. Many of the best speakers are just 2-way. 2) Ignore power ratings. They are just marketing hype. Get a good quality 4-channel amplifier between 50 and 100 watts RMS per channel. If you get a sub later, get a monoblock bass amp for it and switch the crossover switch on the 4-channel to "HP" (high-pass). 3) Enjoy the music...
