How do I easily add speakers to my car audio system?

Car amp with 4 channel with supported speakers?

  • 1. My first query is when a 4 channel amp specification says - "Power Output 125 watts RMS x 4 channel": (i) Does this means that I can plug 4 speakers, each of having 125 watts RMS power to each of its channel or (ii) Does this means that I can have 4 speakers, each of having 125/4 = 30 watts RMS power? 2. My second query is right now my car has existing audio system: Max 50 w X 4 22w RMS per channel with 4 ohms impedence (4- 8 ohms allowable) 2 Speakers: 5-way Max 400 w 80 w continous 4 ohms (i) I would like to add 2 more front speakers, which one is better - 2-way or 3-way speakers? (ii) What wattage I should target for my front speakers so that it goes well with rear speakers (Rear speakers are of 80 watts RMS each)? (iii) What kind of 4-channel amp I should target for to power all these 4 speakers. (with scope of adding single sub-woofer too in future) Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

bit lengthy but for basics, look at what the bridged specs are. U have 125w x4. bridge 2 channels to a sub, should get 300-400w. Then the other 2 channels to front speakers. avoid 3 way speakers. get some quality components AND a quality amp. quality amp power costs $$. or go with a 75wx4 and u get 200w on 2 bridged channels and 75w x 2. forget stock speakers. quality speakers are 2 way, not 3. avoid walmart. call crutchfield.com for more research, easy, and call the reps for ideas on how to get a good system set up and DO create a budget to make it easier.

RMS is the recommended power and Max(Peak) is the most watts it will pull out. You Answers Yes 4 speakers but at 125watts RMS each speaker. As for your current system, if you are after the cinema effect go for components in the front. I would use components as it is better quality sound compared to the 2 or 3 way speakers. If you want 2 or 3 way speakers use 3 ways more to them. You are under powering your rear speakers by alot and it is better to over power them by a bit ie. 80w RMS better to get an amp that is 80wrms x 4 or 90wrms x 4 @ 4ohms. So if you want to match and make it easier look for a set of speakers with the same rms wattage as the rears and thats how you will find your amp. Your amplifier should have the same RMS or a bit more than your speakers as if it to much will overpower them and demolish them. Any good 4 channel amp will be good that has around 80wrms x 4 @ 4ohms. If you are thinking of putting a subwoofer in later and do not want to touch your speakers get a 5 Channel Amplifer. As they have the usual rmsx4@4ohms and then a subwoofer channel at its rmsx1@4ohms. The extra channel is usually around 220wrms which is enough to power a decent subwoofer. Kicker, soundstream, alpine and response make good 5 Channel Amps perfect for your set up you are after.
