Subwoofer question worried about them?

I am worried the amp if too powerful for the subwoofer I ordered?

  • I am worried that the amp (rockford fosgate p500.2) is to powerful for the single (p2412 rockford fosgate) subwoofer that I ordered? The amp gives out 500 rms bridged. The p2 subwoofer gives out 250 rms and has a max of 500 watts. Would I just not bridge the amp and have a single 250rms? Can an amp be too powerful? Thanks

  • Answer:

Basically,i f you run at single 250rms/500max it will be spot on for that sub mate and the bonus is your amp wont have to work hard so will prolong use... All i know is...when setting up a sound system you must match the amp rms output with the speaker rms, maybe go 10-15% higher on the amp to get the best out of the speaker without damaging the speaker and promoting lifespan Your subwoofer will withstand 500w max for a negligable amount of time before it blows..ie. this is the most input the components will withstand, if you are running constantly at 500w your sub will soon blow!!, max could even be a little lower as manufacturers usually inflate these figures to promote them Also, your amp has an "rms" power of 500w this is the route mean square ie. the mean constant power output, this means your amp will fluctuate..may output more or less than this value ...so at some point your amp may be running at say 600w (closer to max wattage) and will be greater than the subs max wattage Hope it helps mate

If the amp gives out 500watt max and the sub has a 500 watt max then it should be fine. the amp it give out what it need up to 500w. but lowering the gain would help to be safe.
