How can I power 4 speakers with a 2-channel amp?

How can I power my dual subs and speakers with my five channel amp efficiently?

  • I have a JVC KD-R610 headunit and four kenwood speakers. Two 6 by 9s in the back that have a 450 watt peak power and rms of 110 each and two 6 inch speakers for the front doors which have a 270 watts peak power and rms of 70 watts each. My head unit offers 50*4 watts peak to each of the speakers but only give my speakers 20 watts rms each which is why I decided to order a 5 channel amp to power my speakers and a dual sub both of which I have not yet installed but will when they arrive tomorrow. The five channel 1800 watt amp can give 120 watts rms per speaker and 200 watts rms for the sub. My question is how much rms power should I feed my speakers so they can function properly and give a nice full clear sound and how much should I feed my subs which have 300 watts rms?

  • Answer:

200 Watts would be OK for the subwoofer. If you have two subs that are 300 RMS then I wouldn't recommend it. I'd recommend buying a dedicated amp for your bass drivers. As for your 6x9s and the 6 inchers, you basically answered your own question. 120 Watts RMS going into a 70 watt RMS speaker, and 110 RMS speaker sounds alright to me. As for as I can see, you should be alright. Just adjust everything accordingly, in terms of gains, and you should be alright. Pay attention to the OHM ratings when it comes to your amp, and subwoofer(s). Take this for example. If your amp can push one 4 OHM subwoofer safely, and you have one 4 OHM sub you want to use, then your in the safe zone. But, if you have two 4 OHM subs that you want to use, thats where you would run into problems. Two 4 OHM subs wired in Parallel makes a 2 OHM load, which MIGHT push the amp into protect mode. The way to bypass this is to wire the subs to produce a 8 OHM load. To do this, you wire the woofers in a series. Its gets a little confuseing. I worded it the best I could. Good luck with your install.
