Question about car speakers?

CAR AUDIO: amp to speakers question.?

  • hey guys, just a few quick questions about a system i would like to setup in my 1995 toyota corolla 4dr sedan. see, it only has 2 speakers in the front door panels, and im looking to try to put just a tad more sound through my car. im thinking of installing an 50w or 52w x 4 aftermarket audio deck and run amp cable from that and the battery under the carpet to the trunk, where i would install an amp. i would then cut out holes in my back bash to install 2 6x9 speakers ( im liking the reviews on the alpine type s, sorta want that price range [100-200] for speakers) my questions are: 1. is this a good idea to ugrade my audio? do you have any suggestions? 2. what sort of amp would i need to run the speakers? how many channels? 3. are there any better solutions you can come up with? thanks so much for your time, spencer

  • Answer:

You don't NEED to install an amp if you simply want more sound throughout your car. Depending on your front speakers, I would replace them with the same brand/model as your new 6x9's. Upgrading your audio deck (head unit) should give you enough power for those speakers but if you really want to jam out, find a 4 channel amplifier you like and that will be enough. Personally, I would run new speaker cable to the new 6x9's directly to the head unit (if your car never had rear speakers set up). That way in case you decide not to have the amp or you want to sell your car, the car now has 4 fully functional speakers. What I mean is, don't run the amp to the trunk and then ONLY run 2 short wires to your rear speakers. It will work but personally I'd like to have them hard wired in case you take out the amp/sell. So: 1. Of course its a great idea to upgrade! 2. 4 Channels will work. You might need another 2 channel or monoblock if you want a sub with decent power as most 4 channel amps wont give you enough for the boom boom along with your front speakers. 3. Don't buy the amp yet. Install the new speakers and head unit and see if that is enough sound for you. I'm sure it will be but if not, go for the amp if you really want to make your ears bleed! LOL.
