Playing divx movies on my car stereo how to get them?

Just got a pioneer avh-p3100dvd which will play divx movies. My question is how to get a movie to easily convert to divx? I just got a portable hard drive (250G) and successfully re-formated to fat32 to be compatible. Can I store divx movies on this drive and open them on my stereo? The music storage is working perfectly.
