What kind of amplifier do i need for adding a subwoofer into a stock sound system?
-
I just bought a subwoofer for my vehicle due to blowing too many speakers out with maxed out bass settings. Right now everything in my car is stock. The car came with a "premium" sound system, and even includes a stock amplifier, but I am unaware how to hook up the subwoofer to what I have. The amplifier I have doesnt seem to give me a lot of options, theres two cables that go into it. One looks like one solid cable that has a round head on it with 6 pins. 1 pin in the middle, and 5 pins making almost a circle around the middle pin, but not really below the middle one. The other cable looks like a bunch of wires grouped together that lead to a larger jack that is square, white, and has about 18 pins. I am assuming this amplifier wasnt made to really add anything onto this system. It says "Mitsubishi motors" and "Infinity" on it, and has a product code, but nothing else really. Firstly, does anyone know if a subwoofer can be hooked up to this? And if not: If i have to buy another type of amplifier, do you know if the cables that went into this one will fit into another one? I would like to be able to do this project without replacing all the speaker wires. I actually want to get a new head to the system also that allows for isolated subwoofer level control. Does it sound like the setup I have needs to be completely replaced including cables and all? Or are there converters or adapters? Does anyone have any advice on what I can do?

Answer:
If that's the Mitsubishi Infinity system, it can be done. You will find that in may involve 1 "BIG" problem You can go into any Best Buys and have this amp installed with a special audio cable that goes between your head unit and amplifier. You may also have the option of running a High Level input off a back speaker, if your amplifier will support it. The problem with stock head units is with an increase in volume, your bass level will actually go down. It is like this from factor to protect your speakers and make your Premium Audio System last forever, no matter how bad it sounds. I use to have a 2001 Mitsubish Eclipse with the Infinity sound system. I added a Infinity Bass Link ( 1 woofer and 1 passive radiator in a black plastic cabinet ) and had to adjust it everytime I turned up or turned down something. If your looking to change head units down the road, I wouldn't put much money into this system. I would look on the "USED MARKET" for a Infinity Bass Link or a Bazook powered bass unit. I would then take it to Best Buys, or any cheap audio store and get them to install the cable or High Level input jack. The cables are like $35 to 45 dollars, you will have to add power and ground cables also and run audio wire around your car. You are looking at 100 to 150 easy, just a heads up for you.

You can almost use any amplifier you want or prefer. To hook an amp up to a stock system you need to purchase a 'LOC' Line Out Converter. The LOC gets tapped into your existing speaker wires Before the stock amplifier. LOC converts the speaker or high level into the RCA's/ low level used on aftermarket amps.
