How to unlock a factory car stereo?

Will my factory speakers work with a new car stereo installation?

  • I have a 2001 Chrysler 300m, with 9(?) factory speakers. Currently I have my two kenwood subs and kenwood 1800w amp hooked up to my factory stereo, but am interested in getting a new car stereo for Christmas for better sound, appearance, and what not. Will a new car stereo installation power be compatible and power my subs? Also, for instance...if the stereo says it is 50w x 4 channels, does that mean it will only power four speakers? Does this include my subwoofers? I'm not too familair with the head unit aspect of car audio haha.

  • Answer:

Yes. Your car actually has factory amplifiers powering your head unit. Replacing the head unit will require a professional or knowledgeable installer. The aftermarket head unit will not power the system effectively by itself. You will have to use aftermarket amplifiers or that knowledgeable installer that can make the factory amplifiers work with the new head unit. 50x4 means just that 50 watts peak power running to 4 speakers. Again, Its not recommended to run all nine off the new head unit alone.
