I need an amp for my subwoofers.

What amp would i need for subwoofers?

  • ive been looking around(online) and im wondering if this is true, if you have two, 500 watt subs, would you need a 1000 watt amp? and if not what do you need? i dont understand subwoofers and amps at all. can someone help? also with all this "ohm' and other stuff, i dont understand. I just dont want to buy subs that arnt compatible with the amp or the car, or both. Can someone please clear this up for me? thanks

  • Answer:

you dont want to give it full power because after time they will blow u should get a 800 watt rms amp which means it gives 400 to each sub

Power rating for speakers means that's the max power they can take. You can usually tell when speakers are overdriven since they sound distorted when they get too much power. In general the amp is rated at less than or equal the rating of the speakers. Ohms is the impedance of the speaker. Like resistance. Amps are rated for power and impedance load, like 400 watts into 8 ohms. In general, half the impedance (8/2=4) and the amp will double power. However, many amps don't function well below 4 ohms. You can vary the impedance of a two 8 ohm speaker system on one channel by wiring parallel (both + together and both - together for 4 ohms) or series ( - of one to the + of the other for 16 ohms). Google parallel ans series wiring
