What kind of car stereo do I need?

What kind of part do I need to install a new stereo in my car?

• I have a 2003 pontiac grand am, with a shitty cd and cassette player stereo. I want a new one with the audio jack that enables you to connect it right to your ipod. I almost bought one like 2 years ago, but the guy claimed the "special part" I needed to install it was 150 dollars, which was more then the price of the stereo. so I didn't go thru with it. but I really wanna try again cuz I want to be able to play my ipod in the car. I can't do the cigarette lighter version with an adapter cuz my cigarette lighter is broken. having a new stereo with the jack right there would be so easy and convienent. so is this "special part" the only way to do it? and if so is there a cheaper place to get it besides bestbuy who wants an arm and a leg.

  It is a very easy thing to do buy the deck you want the go to your local stereo shop and ask for the wiring harness for your vehicle now all you have to do is take the deck out of the box and unplug the wire harness from the deck now open the package to your new harness and now you have two harness connect them together by matching up the color red to red, yellow to yellow, black to black, those are all the essential wires for power and memory next connect the 8 speaker wires (2 per speaker) now that being done reconnect the deck harness to the deck now you have a plug on the remaining end so go to your car pull out the stock deck unplug it and remove from the area take the sleeve that is on the new deck slide it off and slide it in to the deck hole in the dash and fold the tabs to lock it in place now plug the new harness in to the dash harness that was attached to the old deck plug the antenna in and slide the deck in to the sleeve until you hear a click locked in place now put on the trim just clicks on now turn on the car a play the harness that you need can be found at any place that deals with car stereo stuff about 20-30$ any mire then that and you are getting ripped of that is every thing you need to know on how to install a deck when you buy on just make sure you can plug an IPod into it hope this helps good luck PS best answer lol:) PSS you might have to buy a dash kit for that car because the old deck might be bigger then the new on so the kit will fill in the opening for a clean look
