How to set the gain on amp?

How do i set my gain right on my amp?

  • I have a kicker kx100.1 amp that gives off 1200 watts and a single kicker CVR 15" sub that handles 500 watts RMS 1000 watts max. i don't want to underpower the sub so that i dont get maxium quality from the sub but i dont want to overpower it so that i blow my sub. What should i set my gain to to where i get the right amount of power?

  • Answer:

The way I like to tune amps and subs and speakers is this: 1. Turn sub off and just run front speakers. Set the bass, treble and mid to suit these speakers. Then turn it up as loud as you want it to go without any distortion. 2. Run just the rear speakers using the same settings and turn them up as loud as you want them to go. Keep that volume and fade in the front speakers till you feel it is balanced. Sometimes you may need to leave it faded slightly to the front or rear. 3. Then turn the sub back on with gain at lowest. Then turn up the volume on the stereo to the same volume you had previously (your max volume). Then slowly, turn the gain for the sub up until either the sub begins to distort or you have all the bass you need. This way, you'll know where you can turn the volume up to and never overpower your speakers or your sub. Hope this helps you!
