Rockford Fosgate speaker help needed?

Amp RMS Question/ How much do you go over speaker RMS?

  • Let's say I get these MB QUART FSA216 6.5's rated at 40 Watt RMS/speaker 4 ohm (Dual Coil) and MB QUART DTH-169 6x9" COAXIAL 3-WAYs rated at 60 Watt RMS/speaker 4 ohm. I would then get a Amp for those. What I need know is how much over the RMS on the amp do I want to go? Some people say 100 RMS more. So that would mean I need a 300 RMS watt amp. Like a Rockford Fosgate R300-4 300W, Prime Series 4-Channel Amplifier? Specs say 50 watts RMS x 4 channels, SO DOES THAT MEAN ONLY 50 WATTS IS GOING TO GO TO EACH SPEAKER? I am a beginner obviously but I buy from ebay so before I get these things I need to make sure I am utilizing all the power. Should I bump up to 400-500 RMS amp, since the combined RMS watts for speakers is 200, to support this or is that too much? If it matters my head unit will just power tweeters cause it is just a Lanzar dvd deal. Please help time running out. No sub yet that will be later. Have weak budget so as much info would be great. Thanks

  • Answer:

You need an amp that will give you between 60 watts rms and 70 watts rms. Speakers are not like subs, subs can handle a little more power better than interior speakers. Interior speakers you generally do not want to go more than 10 - 20 watts rms more than their ratted rms wattage. Other wise you run the risk of damaging the speakers. Yes that does mean that 50 watts will be going to each speakers. Your stereo will be lucky enough to even power up 1 of my tweeters in my car, never again buy anything with the following 4 names associated with them: Audiobahn, Sony, Lanzar, Boss Audio. They nothing but garbage. If your on a budget that is tight, look into Crunch, HiFonics, Power Acoustik, those are the only 3 budget amps that I would ever trust.
