How do I measure how loud a car audio system is?

How can I measure SPL in my car?

  • Hello guys, I need to measure SPLs produced by my car audio implant. I can measure up to 100db with a db meter. - Where should I keep the db meter for the measurement? - How do I calculate the value? (and if you have it, please post a link to a sound file that can be used for reference) Thanks a lot for helping me! PS: do I need to know the watts of the system to do it? I just know that the two front speakers+tweeters are driven by the radio (I think 4x45 W) and The in-box subwoofer in the trunk and the 2 3-ways speakers over the trunk (face up) are connected to a Audison SRx-4 (http://www.audison.eu/index_main.php?Section=SRX4) in 3-channels mode because I have 1 sub. Thanks!

  • Answer:

your meter is not enough you need one that atleast measures up to 150db because an average conversation is like 80 . Check the rule books of competition associations for where the place it. some measure from the dash some measure where the ear would be and some measure where ever you want to. the extra info about your system is useless. also most spl is measured at 100 hz or lower for competing so only subs really do any good and you need a meter that can measure below 100 hz only if that what you are trying to do. they do not really measure the spl over the entire range because that is considered sound quality.
