What is an antenna adapter used for in stereo installation in cars?

And is it necessary for the speakers as well? Or only for the new stereo? Thanks!

You will need wiring-harness for your specific car & Antenna adapter is needed in order to be able to hook up your factory antenna wire to the aftermarket stereo/headunit. You may also need stereo dash install kit depending if you are going with single DIN or dual DIN setup.

Vehicle manufacturers use proprietary and incompatible connectors for their stock audio systems. There's 2 types of "antenna adapters". They're both used to "adapt" a specific manufacturers proprietary connection to a standard car audio coax connector. The first type allows installation of an aftermarket antenna into vehicles equipped with the OEM (stock) radio. The 2nd type allows installation of an aftermarket head unit by allowing the stock antenna connector to fit into an aftermarket head unit. There are aftermarket speaker adapters, but they are not needed. It's usually fairly easy to cut off the OEM speaker plug and crimp on a set of female "spade" connectors.
