Problems Installing Pioneer deh-p5750mp car stereo cd player?

A friend recently gave me a Pioneer deh-p5750mp car stereo cd player and I'm having trouble installing it. I have successfully managed to connect the positive, earth and constant power wires and turn the unit on. However when I try and connect my speakers (i'm just using speaker wires not the RCA connections) I get no sound. My speakers are just plain old speakers, I'm using no amps, subwoofers or anything fancy, just positive and negative speaker wires. I have checked that the unit is putting out sound by connecting a pair of headphones to the rca output (via an adapter), and I hear audio through the headphones, but I still can't get any sound through the speaker wire connections. I previously had an old Daewoo cd player installed and working fine, so I know there is no problem with the wiring to my 2 speakers. Help me please!
