Why do my subs make a buzzing sound?

  • In my s10, I redid all the wiring to the stereo and it still buzzing. It only buzzes when the car is on and it goes with the rpms.

  • Answer:

the buzzing is probably caused by the power cord and the audio cord being too close together (you're supposed to run them on opposite sides of the car). If it isn't coming from that it could be your amp over powering the speaker.. or just audio hum in the background (cheap amps are bad about this). edited: didnt read ALL the question.. my mistake make sure your power and ground are tight and solid, and that you are using a fuse on the power cord near the battery. double check to make sure no wires are frayed and touching the metal of your vehicle. cant be entirely technical with you as its been awhile since ive done anything with audio.

I had a 3000 watt system in my s10 and after spending LOTS of time trying to find out about my buzz i installed a sound reducer (walmart $15). it gets rid of the buzz, i would explain what causes the buzz but we would be here while. but this works and is effective and cheap. Happy Banging!

What you have is commonly called Alternator whine. It is caused by a ground loop and older GM's are bad about this. It occurs when there is a difference in potential between the grounding points of 2 or more components. In other words your radio ground and amp ground are not electrically the exact same. There are several solutions-try finding a better ground for the radio and amp, you can buy a ground loop isolator that plugs into the rca cables ( this is where the noise gets in) running the power and rca's on different sides probably won't help. It can also occur when using low end equipment. A drastic solution is to run a wire ( at least 10ga) from the radio ground to the amp ground in addition to what's already there. You might also try using better quality rca cables as they have better shielding. This is one of the most difficult problems to fix. Good Luck!
