My car stereo is making a static noise?

Why is my car stereo system making static sound and how can I fix it?

  • just had a new mono 1200w amp and subs installed by car toys and two alpine 6x9's that replaced the front two speakers not connected to amp. I also had car toys install an ipod connection that plays my ipod and charges it. when i am playing my music there is an annoying static sound underneath the music and you can really hear it when the volume is up. sometimes it helps to unplug and plug back in my ipod but the static comes back. would a sound processor fix the problem? if not what will?

  • Answer:

You might have a ground loop problem. who knows what these guys did at Car Toys, but apparently they didn't install something correctly. Make sure the ground on the amp is on a bare, solid point of the car. Ive found that's its best to drill out and make my own grounding point instead of using a pre-existing bolt. No idea what car you have, but you could also try grounding the engine block. Also, make sure they used great RCA cables, and they ran them separately from the power cable that connects to the amp, a common problem. I say Great RCA cable because what most people think is good, really isn't. After a lot of trial and error, I've learned that it's best to buy a great RCA cable.
