Wiring route for amp power cable?

Car amp is not receiving power?

  • Like the title says, my aftermarket amp is not receiving power. I've been playing around with it for a couple hours and I've tried this. I tested the ground first and it was showing 0v. I tested the remote wire and got 12v so no issues there. I tested the power cable and got mV readings. I think that is my problem but this doesn't make sense to me. 2 days ago when the amp WAS working I must of taken a turn sharp and the power cord ripped out (amp wasnt secure at the time). The next day is when I decided to make the whole sound system set up look like it was professionally installed. The power cable at the time must of been 10ft (remember the amp was working with this length at this time before it came off) and I cut the only amount I needed to make it look nice. Hooked everything back up and you know the rest. More details of what I did was checking the fuse on the power cable and it looked fine but I decided to take it apart to see if it may of burnt inside the plastic housing. Everything was fine so I decided to plug the battery side of the power cable back into the fuse housing and I tested the other side of the fuse and got about 11v so now I know the fuse is fine and power is at least going through the fuse. Then I plugged the other side of the power cable and I decided to poke holes into the wiring (I won't be using it if this is fixed) to see if volts are dropping and they were. Right next to the fuse I get a 11v reading, half way up the cable towards the amp I get 8v then at the end of the cable I was getting mV. I don't think it's a ground issue because I placed the ground wire where the batterys (-) wire connects to the chassis (battery is in the trunk) and again this was working before. Why is it not working now with only 2 feet of cable when it worked perfectly with 10ft long cable? Or am I not even close to the problem and just wasted all this time typing this? Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

Groundwire to each component have to be in different ground, dont use same ground. Use different places on the chassis. This could be the problem. Atleast this is what others have told me.
