I have one 12'' Alpine Type R, model SMR-1242D. My amp is a Power Acoustik BAMF2000/1D. And is it a good idea to hook up a Schose capacitor

Answer:
Joey that is the wrong way to set the gain on any amplifier. You need a voltmeter to properly set the gain on your amp. If you pre outs are 4 volts, that is what you need to set the gain at (4 volts). The gain is not a volume selector at all, it is however a voltage selector. The LPF for your sub can be set by ear, to your liking. Also a capacitor is not needed within your application at all, especially since a cap is not going to stop dimming lights but will enhance the problem. Joey go learn about the products before you give bad advice.

hey George, I appreciate your input, but I answered this question based on the fact that the person who asked it has limited knowledge with mobile electronics, and therefore probably doesn't own a dmm or much less, how to use it. Yes, we both know the gain is not a volume setting, but the advice I gave was to help the person tune their amp in a safe manner without hurting anything. I think if anybody needs to learn about a product before offering any advice, it would be you, sir. The reason lights dim when listening to music is because the current demand of reproducing that musical note exceeds the storage capability of the battery, and pulls the energy from the alternator. The purpose of the capacitor is to store energy in an area before the battery, so when the amplifier demands current, it draws it from the cap, before it draws from the battery, preventing drain on the vehicles electrical system. This will result in less chance of lights dimming. You also stated that the croos over can be set to your liking, but if you'd like to get technical about that as well, it should actually be set up to provide smooth transition btwn the other drivers in the vehicle to the subwoofer, and the only truly accurate way to do this would be with a real time spectrum analyzer, but I'm not going to assume the person asking the question owns one of these either considering that cost a cpl thousand dollars to own. I have been installing professionally for almost a decade and would not give somebody bad advice. I only offered my opinion to be used as help or advice for ppl who may not have the knowledge or tools that you or I have. This question is way too difficult to answer accurately without knowing what the rest of your stereo consists of. I would make sure the low pass filter is turned on, and set anywhere btwn 60 and 100 hertz. Now, turn the gain or input sensitivity all the way down on the amp, and turn your radio up to the loudest possible listening level you would normally listen to your stereo at. From that point, slowly turn up your gain or input sensitivity until one of two things happen... Either your subs start to distort or waffle (begin to sound abnormal/bad) or the bass drains out the rest of the music. You have now tuned your amp. Now, whether or not you need to put that cap in, depends on how your electrical system reacts to the tuned amp. If lighting in your car dims when bass notes hit, you should prob throw that cap in there. There is a more technical formula for determining the need for a cap, but watching the lighting is the easiest way to tell. Joey Joey
