My speakers have a problem.

My speakers squeal and crackle after installation of my new amp and sub. Whats the problem?

  • I installed a new 500watt amp and sub package yesterday and wired it to the fuse box, specifically the stereo fuse which was a 5amp. I upgraded that to a 15amp. The amp is grounded properly, no question about that. I only connected the amp to the 6x9 stock speakers in my car via audio cable. The front speakers are in no way connected to the amp, only to the deck. They are also stock, along with the tweeters that came factory fitted. After installing the amp and sub, they worked fine and there was no problem, up until about 1.5 hours of driving when it started turning on and off randomly, I have managed to discover this was due to overheating. After that issue was solved, i started noticing only this morning and tonight that when i accelerate and put the volume up only to a moderate level the speakers would squeal and crackle. At first I thought it was the amp draining too much power from the stereo so i disconnected it and changed it back to a 5amp fuse. I drove around again to test it and the same thing happened again! Now i think my speakers have blown because all of them make this noise, i think because of a power shortage or something. I also have a feeling the deck is stuffed although it still works fine. I have no idea what the problem is. The amp and sub are not connected to power, only to the back speakers at the moment, but that amp was never connected to the front speakers and they are making that noise too so i have no clue what the culprit is. Please help me!! Thank you

NO !!! The 5 amp fuse in the small fuse box under the dash is just for the memory in the factory radio, NOT for the power. Remove that wiring... You will need to run the power cable thru the fire wall all the way to the main distribution block next to the car battery. 500 watts is like 40 amps, so you will also need an in line fuse in this power line as close to the distribution block as you can safely get. Start with a -30- amp fuse & see if that works. DO NOT go over 40 amp for the fuse.
