Why are my subs constantly hitting as soon as I turn them on?

Think I blew my subs.?

  • Ok i have 2 power acoustik 12s in a ported box. The specs on the subs are single 4ohm voice coil 450 rms 800 max. Powering them i have a bamf 2000/1d. I have these subs wired down to 2ohms. My amp will push 900rms at 2 ohms (so that matches the rms on the subs.) the subs call for 2cuft per chamber on ported my box it 3.7 total. Today i noticed i could smell something burning. And now when i turn my music up i hear a noise like my subs are hitting something. That errrrg noise. (i dont known how else to descirbe it).

  • Answer:

Yea, burning coils smell horrible. For a week or so even. The possible noises you could be hearing may be either from passing the subs Xmech (The subs' bottoming out) or the coil is rubbing somewhere in the motors coil gap. Additional: Yes, you can use a digital multimeter and hook it up to the subs coils. It should read within 0.3 ohms of what the coil is. If you don't have a meter, you can try (with the stereo off) pushing the subs cone in and out to see if you can hear a 'scratching noice' or something rubbing.

also make sure your amp is tuned correctly aswel as your headunit. as clipping is a easy way to blow stuff/make it burn
