How many watts can a 8 gauge amp cable handle?

My amp keeps turning off?

  • I just got a 15" fi btl and im running it on a kenwood kac-9004d which puts out 900 watts rms at 2 ohms which i know if way under powering the sub which can run at 2000 watts. I use to be able to turn my radio all the way up and the sub would hit the entire time never cutting out or anything. But today i upgraded my cables with 1/0 gauge wire. I upgrade the wire from my alternator to the positive of my battery, the cable from the chassis of the car to the negative of the battery and a wire from the negative on the battery to the engine block. I re hooked up All the other wires that use to be connect to the battery except i removed the old wire that connected from the battery to the alternator. I have 4 gauge wire running to my amp for both power and i have it grounded also with 4 gauge wire. I will be replacing the 4 gauge with 1/0 gauge when my amp and fuse block arrive. But i am wondering why the amp is now deciding to shut off now when it never did before. Also niether fuse on the amp or the main power fuse are blown. please help any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

tru turning the gain all the way down if it turns off when you turn it up to a point. doing the big 3 might be dumping more current into the amp then it can handle.

Your problem might be that your ground on the amp might be too small and therefore when you turn it up it has more current flowing and cuts off.

Some amps have an internal circuit which shuts it off when it gets too hot, and the wires being too small could make it overheat, so it could be just overheating. When it shuts off, check and see if the amp is really hot or not, if it is, that's probably your problem, if it's not, then it's probably something a little more complicated.

only reason i know without having to read that entire paragraph u wrote is check your rem wire... it tells the amplifier to power up when your car starts on. it is normally a realy skinny wire im sure you know
