Did i blow my speaker?

Can i blow a speaker by connecting it to another speaker?

  • Okay, so I decided to wire some speakers into my stereo system in my car. I had no clue how to do this so i started expirementing. Found out that if i wire that speakers into the little metal parts on my other speakers they work. So i turned off my car and wired em in, then turned em on and one worked. So i wired two into a speaker, turned on the car, and guess what, the speaker sounds like **** now. Did i seriously **** up the speaker or could I accidently have nocked the wire connecting it too my stereo a bit? Is this fixable? Please tell me i didn't break my speaker >:l

  • Answer:

Did you wire them in parallel, so that one terminal of the new speaker went to one terminal of the existing speaker, and the other terminal of the new speaker to the other terminal of the existing speaker? If so, you probably did not hurt the speakers. But there's a good chance you damaged your stereo (amplifier). Wiring speakers in parallel will lower the "impedance" that the amplifier has to drive. All amplifiers have a lower limit to the impedance they can handle. Go too low, and your amp will either distort, or overheat, and possibly cook.

Look dude look for wires that are the same, when i say the same " Say it's a blue wire" I should have 2 blue wires with one with a white strip. One is positive and the other negative, same for your wiring harness in your car. You should have 4 of the same colors with stripes and those are always your speaker wires. Good luck!
