Car Amps, Subs and Audio Players question?
-
Hi, i have a Golf S 1.4 - i've just bought it second hand and it appears to have an aftermarket CD/Audio Player. On the Player it says "4x50w". Does this mean i can have a max of 4 lots of 50w speakers in my car? I plan to fit a Sub(With built in Amp(750W)) and 2 6x9 speakers(500W). Can this be fitted with the Audio Player in the car already? Will the Speakers run of the built in amp in the sub? or will it attach to the Audio Player? or do i need to purchase another Amp? Just to let you know i don't know much/anything about car speakers and audio players in cars so any elaboration on anything you say would be helpful! Answer:
The head unit says 4x50w but that is a 'peak' power output rating. It's probably closer to 4x18w RMS. To answer your question, it means that the head unit can put out four channels of audio: Left and Right; Front. Left and Right; Rear. This is still stereo sound, so it's two-channels (stereo) and not surround sound. These 'channels' can only put out so much power until they either cause distortion, or internal damage to the head unit due to overload. That being said, you can easily connect a single speaker to each of the four channels. If you buy a component speaker system (separate woofer and tweeter) that's fine... as the crossover will make them 'look' like a single speaker to the head unit. I see no reason why you can't connect a set of 6x9's and an amp/sub to the head unit... just understand that the 6x9's won't be able to keep up with that amp and sub unless you run more power to them. You might be better off running a three or four channel amp instead. Mark
