How can you find out if you owe back taxes on personal property?

If I still haven't seen anything in the mail, how can i find out if i owe property taxes?

  • Answer:

Call the tax collector's office and find out when the bills are due out. Each state has its own schedule. In MO bills are rendered in November or December and payment is due by Dec 31st. The county where I live has been extremely slow in getting bills out. Last year they finally got them out before Thanksgiving but for the 8 years prior to that it was typically around Christmas. And a couple of times bills arrived AFTER the due date! Even so, any bill that was not paid by Dec 31st was LATE and the penalties applied.

If you own a property, you have to pay property tax. If you have not received the bill, you need to call your county tax collector office. They may have your old address. The first property tax bill is due to the end of Oct. You had better call them as soon as possible to avoid penalty

The obvious answer is to call the government agency that collects property taxes and ask them.
