Background check for a job?

If I owe the IRS money does that show up on my background check when I'm trying to get a job?

• I currently owe the IRS just $231 from last year's taxes and I am interviewing for a job where the IRS has to do a background check so I was just wondering if that could possibly show up on the background check and hinder me from getting the job until that is paid? Someone said it will be ok as long as the IRS has not put a tax lien on it and that it will probably come out of this year's tax return so I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Does anyone know if that will be a possible hindrance to me getting this job?

  NO it should not keep you from getting a job, I doubt $231 is going to show up on a background check. But yes IRS will offset your 2009 tax refund to the debt. The 231 could be twice as much by now, did you contact IRS last year and let them know you could not pay, or did you just ignore the balance due notices. Ignore IRS or any balance notices it not a good thing, it will cause levying of wages, liens, and employers are not to thrill when IRS demands them to take the money from your pay. (extra paperwork for a company.) good luck in getting your job! and never ever ignore a bill, you must contact them and let them know you can pay, or than that the ones you owe to will just think you are refusing to pay.
