Can a married couple file taxes separately?

File taxes for married couple separately or jointly?

  • Generally speaking of course. I'm a contract worker and I make x dollars per year. My wife owns her own business and breaks about even every year, resulting in no tax obligation. We just got married last year. Should we file jointly or separately?

  • Answer:

In the vast majority of cases you will pay less total tax by filing a joint return. This is particularly true when your incomes differ by a significant amount. If you want to know for sure, prepare your returns both ways and go with whichever way results on the lowest total tax liability.

Other answers

As a general rule, you are always better off filing jointly if you are married. Married filing separately is intended for spouses to use when the other disappears and can't be found or they are completely not getting along. I can't even stand to be in the same city as my soon to be ex and I am still filing jointly, as distasteful as that is.

do it both ways and see which winds up being better
