How do Unemployment extensions work?

How do unemployment extensions work?

  • i know initially you get 26 weeks when you open claim then 13 weeks of extension, but ive heard people maxing out at 99wks. How is that?

  • Answer:

There are, or at least until recently there were, multiple extensions possible. Not every unemployed person in every state is or was able to collect for a full 99 weeks. For reasons that are mostly political, the Republicans in the Senate have blocked further extensions of unemployment benefits, even though those monies will be repaid by the states through the states' unemployment trust funds once they eventually become solvent again. They are too stupid to realize that many of those folks will now be forced to resort to welfare assistance for survival and that those funds, once expended, are lost forever. Or they just don't give a sh*t.

They have been discontinued. When they were in force, if someone got to the end of their first extension without finding a job, they could in many cases qualify for a second, and a third......

Not all extensions are the same length, and it used to be possible to receive more than one extension. 99 is the total of the original 26 weeks plus 5 extensions, including a 20-week extension, 3 short extensions, and then another 20-week extension.
