Do you think a tax should imposed if a company decides to outsource jobs overseas?
-
I'm not a strong proponent of imposing onerous taxes on individuals or corporations but I do believe major well capitalized firms with large market shares should be fined for outsourcing jobs. Yes I do understand that outsourcing jobs reduces a corporations expenses decreasing overall liabilities drastically, cleaning up balance sheets provide investors confidence. Then investors help raise capital and profit margins are higher and those are used to compensate investors, and employees (most execs though). But realistically it takes jobs away from hard working individuals and income from their family. Also that's just more individuals the government gets to tax (regardless of rates) thus raising more revenue for the government and less unemployed and a more edified nation. I mostly despise when hard working engineers and consultants have their jobs outsourced considering the strenuous and diligent work they put in to attain those skills.

Answer:
Main reason for outsourcing in the first place is to keep your product priced competitively in the market place; too high of a tax burden is one of the main reasons for outsourcing; raise taxes and outsourcing is increased. Have you heard the old phrase that the power to tax is the power to destroy? We will see that in the coming year when the Bush tax cuts expire and the talking heads insulated in dc put through major tax hikes; our economy is bad now, but we will be finding out what the word "worse" means very shortly.

It doesn't take jobs away - but it does SHIFT them to another location. This is the price of "globalization" and it's too late to reverse it.
