Can I get another solar federal tax credit if I move?

How much would my Father get in Child Tax Credit if he claimed a 19 y.o. as a dependant on his taxes?

  • I am a 19 year old male who still lives at home, is a full time student but provides ALL of my own support. I am wondering just how much my father would receive in Child Tax Credit if he and his wife (who made around $70,000 in 2009) claim me as a dependent on their joint taxes? I understand that he can claim me as a dependent until I move out, am 24 years old, or get married. I am not sure though if he can claim me if he did not provide any support for me financially. The only support my father has given me is paying a few bills that I eventually paid him back for. My car insurance is in his name, my car is in his name and I am still covered under his health insurance. He pays the bills every month (cell phone, tv, etc..) and I pay my portion that we collectively agree I should pay. I do not pay rent nor do I eat his food. He recently got re-married a year and a half ago and his income doubled. My mother is deceased If he claims me as a dependent, I owe in taxes to both the State and Federal Government almost $600! If he doesn't claim me I should receive around $450. I have already lost out on $4800 (now increased to $5300) in FAFSA from my state for 2009 and will probably lose it again for 2010. What should I do?

  • Answer:

not a thing the personal exemption for any person on a tax return is $3650, there is a child credit of $1000 for a child in the home under 17 that applies to the tax liability, it is not a refund and neither is the exemption amount actually you are still a qualifying child for your father to claim and since he really doesn't need your exemption you should discuss it with him by the way support consists of your portion of rent(or mortgage) taxes, insurance, repairs, food, clothing, medical, transportation and entertainment, it looks like he provides more than 50% of that for you and is entitled to the exemption(it only reduces his AGI to a lower taxable income)

Child tax credit? Zero. That ends when the child turns 17. Total tax benefit from claiming a 19 year old? No way to tell without knowing a lot more about his tax situation. He'd likely get around $550 tax savings from the exemption, and maybe something for an education credit. And by the way, he can't necessarily claim you until you move out, get married, or turn 24. There are other rules to meet. You pay ALL of your own support? How much rent do you pay for living there? You said zero. Then your proportional share of the rent or of the fair rental value of the home is part of his contribution to your support. If you really do provide over half of your own support, you are not a dependent.

he wont get any child tax credit..you are over the age of 17.and if they mad over 70,000 last year, they are not qualified for Earned Income Credit for the qualifying child (which is you). the guide line for earned income and agi limitation is: no qualifyng child - 13440 (18440 for maried filing jointly) 1 child : 35463 (49463 for married filing jointly) 2 children: 40295 (5295 for married filing jointly) more than 3 children: 43279 ( 48279 for married filing jointly) If they are married filing separatly - can not claim earned income credit for qualifying child. So basicall what I'm trying to say is that it will be pointless for them to claim you. You might as well file your own taxes as Single and no one can claim you. Hope thi helps,.

See IRS Publication 501 to determine if he can claim you. If he can, then you cannot claim yourself even if he doesn't claim you. If he can claim you, he will not receive the child tax credit because you are too old. (You have to be under 17 at the end of the tax year).
