Can i file for unemployment?

Collected Unemployment After Military From A State I don't live in. Can I file taxes for the amount I paid in?

  • When I got out of the military, I got unemployment from the state of Minnesota. Because I was a federal employee, I was capable of getting it from what ever state I chose. However, I lived in Michigan. I paid around 600 in taxes on the unemployment, to the state of Minnesota. Should I file in Minnesota to see if I can get any of this back? How would I do that?

  • Answer:

$600 state tax withheld? seems very odd to me not all states tax unemployment but if you had Min income tax withheld and don't file your income taxes there, by all means file a non or part time return to get as much refunded as you can if your tax home is now Mich, you will also claim the unemployment, most states require their citizens to claim income from all sources
