Which prolific Australian bastman retired in early 2009?

I'm a retired Federal Employee.?

  • My gross/taxable income amount for 2010 was the same as in 2009. The federal tax withheld was essentially the same. Deductions all identical. Refund in 2009 = $2227. Refund caluclated by Turbo tax for 2010 is $1440. Has there been some change in the tax rules that I'm unaware of or is there something wrong with Turbo (keeping in mind, I used Turbo for my filing in 2009). Thank you for any input.

  • Answer:

Print out both returns and compare them, line by line. That will show where the differences are.

While the standard deduction and personal exemption stayed the same, the tax brackets widened slightly, so 2010 should have been better not worse. I think you answered a question wrong/differently somewhere.

how would we know what you are unaware of?

I am also retired and my 2010 withholding was $800 less than 2009 due to the making work pay credit (retirees with no earned income do not get to claim). I was surprised when I finished my return and my refund was lower than I expected. I hope that helped.

I have compared the tax rate schedule for 2009 and 2010 and do not see that there is a difference of the $787 you indicate I am referring to the schedules in CCH and altho the 2010 indicates it is the draft of 9/13/2010, there is only $1 difference on income of $33000 for a single person I am sure this is not your status or income but as an example I merely chose any objective amount, married filing joint was $3 difference, etc.
