Can i file taxes if i only received tanf and i have a child under 1?

  • I only received TANF for the year 2011. i have a 7 month old child and i just need to know if i can file taxes. i file every year but this past year was spent with me being pregnant and sick and then having a new born.

    What would be the point? You paid no taxes and have no earned income. But to answer your question, there is nothing that physically prevents you from filing.....you just will not get anything for your effort. To the person who said you get a tax credit.....you need a tax liability to claim the credit.

TANF is not taxable and won't help you qualify for any refundable credits. If you have ANY other income you could file that. If TANF was the ONLY income all year, then there's no reason to file because you don't owe any taxes but you won't get a refund. If you & your child live with the child's father or your parents, they might be able to claim the child. If you live alone with your child, then nobody claims you or your child.

Anyone can file, but your return would show all zeroes. If your question is really would you get any money for filing, no you wouldn't. So there would be no point.

TANF and other public assistance is not taxable income so there's no need to file if that's your sole source of income for 2011. There's nothing to be refunded because taxes are never withheld from your benefits, and they are not earned income for any of the refundable credits such as the EIC.

You will not receive a refund and that is probably what you were wondering. No earned income means nothing to apply for a refund. Your tanf is already tax dollars coming to you.
