  • Answer:

No, you do not report tax refunds to Social Services. They have no impact on support levels. Household income is all that matters and tax refunds are not income.

No, you should definitely report the income, as it is considered income. If you do not, and the Department of Social Services finds out that you did not report it, then it can be determined as fraud. What may happen is that after you report the tax refund, they will suspend your benefits for as long as THEY believe that money should last you. So, don't do any foolish spending or they can & will make you account for it when you need help again. So, yes, most definitely report it.

A tax REFUND is NOT income. If you put it in your bank account it DOES count as an asset. A tax refund is a refund of what you overpaid throughout the year (even if you didnt actually over pay and it came from refundable credits) There is no need to report that as income.

I don't know where "Tina" gets her information from, but tax refunds are NEVER treated as income for public support benefit determinations. A tax refund is a refund of an excess payment and those amounts were already included in his gross income before the benefit amounts were set.

You do not have to report tax refunds as they are not household income. When it comes time for you to recertify, if the money is in a savings or checking account (or cash), then you will claim it as an asset... so it can be beneficial for you to purchase items ahead of time (like groceries, household or personal items, clothing or shoes for your children, etc. - items you'll need so that the money doesn't have an affect on your assistance by being an asset). However, check the guidelines for the assistance that you're receiving - cash assistance only allows you a maximum number of liquid assets in almost every state; in some states you can receive food stamps no matter how much you have in liquid savings and in other states there is a cap -- check before you spend. You do not report it as income though.

if your husband works how it is that you get welfare, his income is that small? that means you are all getting welfare, not just you if he has income you file married, jointly, the welfare is not reportable or taxable but it might lead to reexamination of your eligibility for welfare
