How do I file tuition money on my taxes?

What to do if you forget to put in your tuition paid for the year on your taxes?

  • First time filing alone through Turbo Tax and my slip from college telling me my tuition paid in and everything came in the week after I filed it. Can I still claim that on my taxes for 2011? I haven't received my refund via e-file yet due to the delay with the IRS. I know if I'm able to file this some how i'll get more money back. Please help this young and confused college student get her money back!!!!

  • Answer:

Are you a dependent of your parents? If so, you can't claim that credit. Give the 1098-T to your parents. They can probably use it to claim some of the Education Tax Credit. If you are *not* a dependent, then you can file a revised return, but wait until your original return has been processed and you have received your initial refund before you file the 1040X.

if you are a dependent your parents claim the tuition if not, you can file a 1040X but wait at least 6 wks to do so

Yeah, file a 1040x. At our company, a 1040x can not be filed electronically- you have to actually mail it in. Because of that, the fees can not be taken out of the return so it has to be paid for up front. Do it, though. The girl I did one for the other day had already received and spent her return, but her 1098-T is bringing her another cool $1000. She creid. It was beautiful.
