Can i file for unemployment?

I received less than $2400 in unemployment this year. Can I file my tax return without waiting for 1099? IL?

  • I live in Illinois.I was laid off from my job January 19th. I received only 3 weeks of unemployment before I was called back to my job and I received only about 1500 dollars total from unemployment. I have read about a tax exemption where the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits an individual receives in 2009 are tax free. Can I file my tax return with just my W2 from my employer or do I still have to wait for a 1099 from the state?

  • Answer:

Jeff, you are okay. Once you subtract the $2400, you are down to $0 from unemployment. There is absolutely no reason why you would have to enter the 1099G into software because it doesnt' change *anything* on the return. The $2400 deal is NEW for 2009, so it's tripping up oldtimers.

No. But you can log into your Unemployment Account and get a copy of your 1099 which will show you all the information you need to file. Hope this Helps.

You must get that 1099. They have until the end of the month to issue them, so you should have them by Feb 7 or so, allowing up to a week for mail. That's only a couple of weeks at the latest.
