How do I file taxes when I worked in two different states?

I received two different W2s for the same state, for the same company. How do i file?

  • Upon receiving my W2s, I proceeded to check them out. I live in missouri, and work for one company. For that company I have worked in the states of Kansas, missouri, and Iowa in 2009. Compared to my last pay stub, the federal, ks, and iowa taxes each have one W2, and the amount is correct. However I have two missouri W2s for the same company, same tax ID. One claims 16K on reportable wages, and also says I paid 525 in taxes to missouri. The other which reports the 19k, says I paid only 146 in taxes to missouri. My last pay stub says I paid 671 (146+525=671). My biggest issue is the reportable wages, it makes it look like I had two jobs in the same company. If you add the 19k plus IA plus KS reportable wages, it equals box 1 on federal wages. So... How do I file these or do I need to talk to my company? Because I'm clueless.

Report all of them. It sounds like they reported your total income between two W-2's. If you have any doubts, all you have to do is add up all your pay stubs for the year to find out your total gross pay and total taxes withheld. They are required to issue a W-2 with the same number, and if they do it on two different forms, that's not really a problem. (It sounds like they have a billing issue between the owners. You were likely issued these W-2's from two different departments of the same company. Nothing wrong with that at all, just a little odd.)

You can talk to your company but I would enter the W-2s separately. This is what has been sent to the IRS and you should match it in you filing.

Yes, you should talk to the company. Have them explain what they did.

Ask the companies H payroll to find out as why they issued two W2s. You can file taxes irrespective of the number of W2s, but make sure that you do not get wrong amounts and end up paying extra. Make sure that your SSN, Name, Address everything printed correctly.
