Can a Physician Assistant be self employed?

Received 1099-Misc but I am NOT self-employed!?

  • I was in the process of filing my taxes and Turbo Tax determined that I was "self-employed". I do NOT believe I am self employed. I work for a small office as an assistant. I work directly for my boss, and I do not provide any my own office, supplies, etc. I never filled out a w-4 or any type of contract. I receive a company check biweekly with nothing deducted. I am a college student and do not make that much as it's a part time job so I cannot afford to pay extra taxes on top of what I would already owe. I knew I had to pay for some taxes of course, but I found out I had to pay for self-employment taxes as well when I'm not self employed. I am a bit angry that my employer did this and I waited until now to figure it out. I didn't think there would be a problem. I read that I can fill out a SS-8 form. Do I do this first and wait for my status and THEN file? I'm confused on the process, because I've never been in this situation. Any help would be great!

  • Answer:

Your employer is a crook. File your taxes FIRST to meet the 4/15/10 deadline, then submit the SS-8 as of YESTERDAY.
