New York State Tax Refund- Does my State Refund Look Normal?

• Hello, I'm a college student I'm filing my tax online based on the income of $24,192.27 I earned from a part time job. Here's my W2 information, and for some reason, my State Refund is way lower than the previous year when I only made $6,538.45(in 2009). Can someone tell me if the amount below looks normal? or I did something wrong last year?? (I don't have any special situations, single, not a home owner, no additional credits, and my fed return looks good since I get college hope credit) FY2010 1.Wages: $24,192.27 2.Fed.income tax withheld: $2,405.74 3.SS wages: $24,192.27 4.SS tax withheld: $1,499.98 5.Medicare wages: $24,192.27 6.Medicare withheld: $350.76 16. State income tax $973.48: ** Projected State Refund per Online Tax program: $236 (apprx.$1400 from federal refund) Last year(FY2009), when my total income was only about $6,500, I received $804 for State Income Tax Refund, and this year, the online tax program says I'll only receive $236 for State Tax Refund.. Does my state refund amount look normal?? This is my 2nd year filing taxes and I have no idea.......... Thx!

  This is no way indicates that you did anything wrong either year. Your refund is smaller because you earned more, so the government keeps more. If your refund was the same size (or larger) this year, that would indicate that you did something wrong this year or last year. Your refund should be smaller when your income is over $24,000 than when it is under $7000.
